Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is a federal program that forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying payments while working full-time for a qualifying government or nonprofit employer.

To qualify for PSLF, borrowers must have eligible federal Direct Loans, work for a qualifying public service employer, and make 120 qualifying payments under an eligible repayment plan.

Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans set your monthly payment based on your income and family size, often reducing payments and helping borrowers stay on track for forgiveness programs.

Borrowers can apply for IDR plans through StudentAid.gov or their loan servicer by submitting an application and income documentation. Annual recertification is required to maintain eligibility.

Missing payments can lead to delinquency and eventually default, which may result in wage garnishment, credit damage, tax refund offsets, and loss of federal student loan benefits.

Borrowers in default may be able to restore their loans to good standing through loan rehabilitation or Direct Consolidation, which can reopen access to repayment plans and forgiveness programs.

Federal consolidation combines eligible federal loans into one loan to simplify repayment and maintain access to forgiveness programs. Refinancing replaces federal loans with a private loan, which may lower interest rates but eliminates federal protections and forgiveness eligibility.
